The department of Computer Science and Engineering is the most recent department of the faculty of electronic engineering. The department offers a comprehensive undergraduate program leading to a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
Computer engineering is a discipline that focuses on the application of computers in a wide variety of areas, including engineering, scientific, industrial, business, and general computational problems. However, the explosive growth in computer performance has made Computer Engineering the fastest growing field of engineering today. Hence, the world needs engineers who can work on both sides of the digital hardware and software. That is exactly what the Computer Engineer is educated to do.
The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) program combines traditional computer science and engineering principles with good practice in design and project management applied to technically demanding problems. At the end of the program, students should be capable of applying these skills to problems requiring the integration of software and hardware. There is an emphasis on team and group work, and the production of quality written reports. Graduate students will be well qualified to play a disciplined and innovative part in research and development across the IT and computer engineering sector.
The current program has been designed to support both academic and professional interests. The core courses provide the skills necessary for a computer engineer to design, develop and implement computer systems hardware and software as well as computer networks. The curricula emphasize the areas of computer hardware design, communication theory and computer networks, system software, database, engineering and information technology. In addition to giving the student a fundamental background in Computer Engineering, a wide variety of elective courses are allowed for study and research in many specialized areas in computer science and engineering. The technical courses offered by the department covers the fields of computer hardware, computer software, computer networks, computer engineering, Database, Microprocessors and their applications, image processing, FPGA, information systems and computer science, etc. The courses are assessed on a semester basis.
The program specifications are designed so that to let the students:
- Have strong foundations in mathematics, basic science and engineering concepts.
- Understand different techniques to do analysis for various engineering problems.
- Conduct experiments and to analyze and interpret data.
- Acquire methods and procedures to design a system or process to meet required needs.
- Work within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
- Has understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
- Equipped with good communication skills.
- Consider and avoid the detrimental impact of engineering solutions within social or global measures.
- Know how to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
- Know the technology required to build computing systems of all types; including both embedded and stand-alone microprocessors and all types of computers.
- Have acquired a good knowledge of the hardware, all the way from the circuits to the architecture, but also necessarily deals with the operating systems and compilers for that hardware. The areas of specialization within Computer Engineering are logic design and computer systems and software.
- Have an integrated understanding of the scientific and engineering principles underlying the four major elements of the field of computer engineering, namely electrical, electronic, digital circuits and microprocessors and its applications.
Objectives:
The mission of the department is to achieve the following objectives:
- Prepare specialists in the field of computer science and engineering who are well-equipped with foundations and implementation methodologies that enable them to meet both the challenges & development in engineering technologies.
- Conduct theoretical and applied research in the field of computer science and engineering, which contributes to the process of development in the society.
- Hold conferences, workshops, as well as national and international seminars in the fields of computer science & engineering and their applications.
- Hold agreements with similar institutions and organizations on the local, regional, and international levels to exchange experience and conduct joint research in the field of computer engineering.
